Selecting an educational path that leads to a specific occupation can be a complex task. The 2015 North Carolina Career Clusters Guide provides “maps” that simplify the task. Designed for career planners and career changers, the Guide connects 16 clusters of occupations with related academic pathways. Education and workforce professionals as well as families will find the Guide a helpful tool for assisting others in making decisions about training and careers.
Individuals exploring the world of work typically find an array of information that may seem fragmented. The Career Clusters Guide provides a framework for pulling that information into a sensible whole. People who want to explore the intersection of their interests with those of people in specific occupations can do so by taking an O*NET-based interest inventory.
Wondering which skills and abilities may connect with occupations? The Guide contains content for linking existing or desired skills with groups of occupations called occupational clusters. Academic pathways within each cluster provide an additional step toward deciding about coursework needed to achieve career goals. Individuals who use tools like the Career Clusters Guide will make the kinds of career decisions that provide well-educated, motivated workers to meet the needs of North Carolina’s current and emerging economy.
The North Carolina Career Clusters Guide includes three major sections:
- Career Exploration – Discover career interests, understand the career planning process, and explore the world of work
- Career Clusters & Pathways – Learn about 16 career clusters, their multiple pathways, related jobs, and real-life career stories
- Gaining Career-Related Experience – Find ways to try out a career through various work-based learning opportunities
The Career Clusters Guide was developed by LEAD through the support and direction of the North Carolina Community College System. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction also provided valuable guidance and feedback.
