North Carolina will celebrate “Employ A Veteran Week,” November 6-10, with a variety of events that help connect veterans to jobs and other services, Governor Roy Cooper announced today.
“As America’s most military and veteran-friendly state, we express our deep gratitude to those who have served our country in uniform, as well as their families,” Governor Cooper said. “We can honor our heroes by helping them get good paying jobs in growing industries that need their skills and dedication.”
“Our NCWorks Career Centers and other partners demonstrate North Carolina’s commitment to supporting veterans and military spouses every day,” said N.C. Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “Employ A Veteran Week represents a perfect opportunity to remind employers that North Carolina veterans bring valuable skills, training, experience, work ethic and leadership ability to any business that hires them, helping make our state ‘First in Talent.”
“In North Carolina, approximately 20,000 servicemembers transition from active duty to veteran status every year. Many of these new veterans want to stay in North Carolina to live, work, and continue raising their families. The N.C. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (NC DMVA) supports our veterans and their families with transitioning and preparing for beneficial employment opportunities,” said Lt. Gen. Walter E. Gaskin, USMC (Ret.), NC DMVA Secretary. “Connecting veterans with employers will result in economic security for our veterans and a skilled workforce for employers.”

The Department of Commerce has 52 NCWorks Veterans Services professionals (all of whom are veterans themselves), whose mission is to help veterans find good jobs and training opportunities. These professionals are located across the state at local NCWorks Career Centers, which serve veterans and other jobseekers, while also helping employers meet their talent needs. In many parts of the state, they also play a key role as partners in Veterans Treatment Courts.
Contact information for each career center can be found at www.NCWorks.gov. In addition, veterans and employers can access services through the NCWorks Veterans Portal at veterans.ncworks.gov.
In 2022, the Commerce department introduced a new resource for veterans, in the form of a national partnership with the Hilton Honors Military Program. Through this partnership, when veterans, transitioning service-members and qualified military spouses need to travel related to their search for work (for example, to go to an in-person job interview or even to look for housing near their new job), they may be eligible for free accommodations at a Hilton property. To participate, veterans should contact or visit their local NCWorks Career Center and ask to speak with a veterans' representative.
