Expansion by Bandwidth Inc. Will Bring 1,165 Jobs to Wake County Over Eight Years Enterprise Software Leader Will Generate More than $103 Million in Capital Investment at its Raleigh Headquarters

Bandwidth Inc., a leading global provider of communications software, will expand its Raleigh headquarters in a move that will bring 1,165 new jobs to North Carolina over the coming eight years, Commerce Secretary Anthony Copeland announced today. The company’s plans include the creation of at least $103,426,500 in capital investment.

Bandwidth Inc [Nasdaq: BAND] connects businesses and consumers with a communications platform as a service (“CPaaS”). Its networking technology is utilized by major names such as Google, Microsoft, Cisco and Zoom. The fast-growing company reported $232.6 million in revenue for 2019, up 14% from 2018. The North Carolina Department of Commerce led the state’s efforts to secure the expansion by Bandwidth, which also considered other national destinations. The company’s new positions will offer wages that average $96,832 in annual total cash compensation, creating an annual payroll impact of nearly $113 million in North Carolina. Its expanded workforce will include new positions in R&D, operations, sales, marketing and administration.

Bandwidth’s North Carolina expansion will be facilitated, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee earlier today. Over the course of the 12-year term of the grant, the project is estimated to grow the state’s economy by more than $2.7 billion. Using a formula that takes into account the new tax revenues generated by the 1,165 new jobs, the JDIG agreement authorizes the potential reimbursement to the company of up to $32,279,250 over 12 years. State payments occur only after verification by the departments of Commerce and Revenue that the company has met incremental job creation and investment targets.

Projects supported by JDIG must result in positive net tax revenue to the state treasury, even after taking into consideration the grant’s reimbursement payments to a given company. The provision ensures all North Carolina communities benefit from the JDIG program. Moreover, Bandwidth’s decision to expand in Wake County, classified under the state’s economic tier system as Tier 3, means the company’s JDIG agreement will result in as much as $10.75 million in new funding for state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account. The Utility Account helps rural and more distressed communities finance infrastructure upgrades necessary in attracting future business.
