The state’s seasonally adjusted June unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, remaining unchanged from May’s revised rate. The national rate increased 0.1 of a percentage point to 3.7 percent.
North Carolina’s June 2019 unemployment rate increased 0.2 of a percentage point from a year ago. The number of people employed increased 16,068 over the month to 4,868,002 and increased 77,262 over the year. The number of people unemployed increased 3,846 over the month to 210,760 and increased 17,000 over the year.
Seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, increased 5,000 to 4,561,000 in June. The major industries with the largest over-the-month increases were Leisure & Hospitality Services at 2,700, followed by Other Services, 2,200; Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 1,900; Financial Activities, 1,300; and Government, 900. Major industries experiencing decreases were Manufacturing, 1,800; Construction, 800; Education & Health Services, 700; Professional & Business Services, 500; and Information, 200. Mining & Logging employment remained unchanged. .

Since June 2018, Total Nonfarm jobs increased 64,100 with the Total Private sector increasing by 61,700 and Government increasing by 2,400. The largest over-the-year increase among major industries was Trade, Transportation & Utilities at 20,000, followed by Leisure & Hospitality Services, 16,800; Education & Health Services, 10,700; Professional & Business Services, 8,100; Financial Activities, 6,500; Other Services, 3,400; Government, 2,400; and Construction, 400. Major industries experiencing decreases were Manufacturing, 3,600; Information, 400; and Mining & Logging, 200.
The next unemployment update is scheduled for Thursday, August 1, 2019 when the county unemployment rates for June 2019 will be released.
