Gov. Bev Perdue announced today that Talon Systems Inc., an international manufacturer of household storage cabinets and furniture, will hire 90 workers over the next three years and invest $5.9 million to open its first U.S. manufacturing plant in Statesville. The project was made possible in part by a One North Carolina Fund grant of $46,590.
“This is the latest example of North Carolina’s ability to attract international companies looking for the perfect U.S. location to invest and grow,” Perdue said. “I will continue to foster a business climate that helps new companies locate here and existing companies expand.”
Talon Systems is a 50-year-old, privately owned Canadian manufacturer of ready-to-assemble furniture and organizational units. Based in Ontario, the company currently employs more than 150 workers and makes veneer storage cabinets, dressers, shelves, computer desks, TV stands, partitions and many other products. Talon products are sold in Costco, Lowes, Ikea, Home Depot, Sears and other retail outlets in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
“Trained workforce, proximity to customer market and raw material, made North Carolina the obvious choice,” said company President Derek Okada.
The One North Carolina Fund provides financial assistance to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment targets to qualify for grant payments. These grants also require and are contingent upon a local match.
Other partners who assisted with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges, N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, Iredell County and the City of Statesville.
