In a previous article discussing the updated data in NCcareers.org, it was noted that the count of occupations available for review had increased from 793 to 823.  What are these new occupations?

When SOC taxonomies change some occupations are assigned a new code, some are broken out from larger categories, often described as “All Other”, and some are combined with other similar occupations. The goal of this exercise is to reflect the ever-changing economy and occupational landscape.  To better understand where thew changes are occurring, this article will discuss the changes within Career Clusters.

The Career Cluster with the largest increase in the number of occupations was Health Science with 12 additional occupations. This change was reflected by the breakout from two 2010 SOCs Physicians & Surgeons, All Other (26-1069) and Surgeons (19-1967).  The new occupations which were separated from Physicians and Surgeons, All Other are: Cardiologists, Dermatologists, Emergency Medicine Physicians, Neurologists, Pathologists, Ophthalmologists, and Radiologists.  While Orthopedic Surgeons and Pediatric Surgeons were broken out from Surgeons.

Information Technology had the second most new occupations with five.  The newly created occupations in this cluster are; Web and Digital Interface Designers; Database Architects; Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers; and Software Developers.
