Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that MiTek Industries Inc., an international building products, software and equipment supplier, will expand its Edenton operations. The company plans to invest more than $2 million and create 29 jobs during the next three years in Chowan County. The announcement was made possible in part by a $28,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.
“North Carolina is the perfect place for manufacturers to grow operations and expand job opportunities,” Gov. Perdue said. “Our state continues to support growing companies by offering a skilled workforce, top-rated business climate and superior quality of life.”
MiTek Industries, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, is a global supplier of state-of-the-art engineered products and services for the building components industry. The company, headquartered in Missouri, has 49 offices and manufacturing facilities worldwide, including 10 in the United States. Its Edenton operation employs 75 people in an engineering office and building truss component stamping plant.
MiTek has acquired Aegis Metal Framing, a provider of products and technology for the steel truss and component industry, and will relocate those operations to Edenton, supplementing its current operations in cutting, stamping and bending steel truss and wood frame connectors. The 29 new jobs will pay an annual average wage of $26,138, not including benefits.
“MiTek’s Edenton manufacturing facility has been a member of the local community for nearly 50 years. We are pleased to bring new jobs and opportunities to the area. Special thanks go to Edenton Town Manager Anne-Marie Knighton, Mayor Roland Vaughan, Chamber of Commerce Director Richard Bunch, N.C. Department of Commerce representative Tim Ivey and the many others who contributed to make this project happen,” said Fred Powers, vice president and general manager of Edenton Operations, MiTek Industries Inc.
The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.
“MiTek has been a long-time contributor to the region’s economy, and we welcome the companies expansion and the new jobs to Chowan County,” said state Sen. Ed Jones.
“During these tough economic times this is an important investment for Chowan County, and it will bring needed jobs to our region,” state Rep.Tim Spear.
Through use of the One NC Fund, more than 35,000 jobs and $6.5 billion in investment have been created since 2001. Other project partners include: the state Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges and the Town of Edenton.
